What Happens During a Hearing Test?

When you arrive for your hearing exam, our front office staff will greet you and ask you to fill out several forms, including those that record your personal information, medical history and insurance verification.

When your hearing exam begins, we’ll review key personal information with you and ask you a few questions to discover the specific types of environments where you may be experiencing hearing loss and hearing impairment.

Next, we may look into your ears with an otoscope, a special instrument to see the ear canal and the eardrum, and/or perform one of the tests below.

Audiometric Test

During this hearing test, you’ll be tested using a series of low and high-frequency words to determine your ability to understand verbiage within a short distance (as in a conversation). We’ll also give you several words to repeat. The results will help us determine your percentage of hearing loss, your ability to understand speech and if hearing aids will help you.

Tympanometry

Tympanometry is a hearing test that creates variations of air pressure in the ear canal to checks the condition of the middle ear, the mobility of the eardrum (tympanic membrane) and the conduction bones

Your Hearing Test Results

We’ll record the results of your hearing test on a form called an audiogram, which we will review with you. The audiogram reflects your hearing loss in frequencies and decibels. We’ll show you the type, pattern, and degree of hearing loss, as well as the percentage of normal conversational speech that you’re still able to hear. We will then relate these results to your concerns about your hearing.

Next, we’ll consider treatment solutions. You can count on our team to take the time necessary to understand your concerns so that they can provide you with everything you need to make an informed personal decision.

Schedule a hearing test with our trained audiologists and discover how much sound you’ve been missing… and how much more you could be hearing.

Why a Hearing Test Could Be One of the Most Important Appointments You Schedule

Hearing loss affects roughly one in five Americans — and most people wait an average of seven years from the time they first notice a problem to the time they actually do something about it. That delay has real consequences.

Research has linked untreated hearing loss to accelerated cognitive decline, increased risk of dementia, depression, social withdrawal, and a reduced quality of life. The longer hearing loss goes unaddressed, the harder it becomes for the brain to process sound effectively — even after hearing aids are eventually fitted.

A hearing test at Clear Hearing in San Antonio does two important things: it tells you exactly what your hearing looks like right now, and it gives you a roadmap for what to do next. If your hearing is fine, you leave with peace of mind and a baseline to track against in future years. If there’s a problem, early intervention dramatically improves outcomes.

Signs it’s time to schedule a hearing test:

  • You frequently ask people to repeat themselves
  • Conversations in noisy places — restaurants, parties, family gatherings — feel exhausting or confusing
  • You turn the TV up louder than others in the room are comfortable with
  • Voices sound muffled, especially on the phone
  • You’ve been told by a family member or friend that you might have a hearing problem
  • You hear ringing or buzzing in your ears

If one or more of these apply to you, don’t wait. A hearing test is painless, takes less than an hour, and could make a meaningful difference in your health and your relationships.

The Hearing Tests We Use at Clear Hearing

A comprehensive hearing evaluation isn’t a single test — it’s a battery of assessments, each designed to reveal a different aspect of how well your ears and auditory system are functioning. Here’s what we may perform during your appointment:

Pure-Tone Audiometry This is the core of most hearing evaluations.

Speech Audiometry It’s one thing to detect a tone — it’s another to understand spoken language. This test measures how well you hear and understand speech.

Tympanometry This quick, painless test checks the health of your middle ear by gently varying the air pressure in your ear canal and measuring how your eardrum responds.

Otoscopy Before any testing begins, we’ll use an otoscope to visually examine your ear canal and eardrum.

Not every patient needs every test. After a brief conversation about your symptoms and medical history, Dr. Wright will determine which combination of assessments will give us the most complete picture of your hearing health. The entire evaluation typically takes less than an hour — and you’ll walk away with results and recommendations the same day.
